Fixes #45330

Breaking change. A request URL built as base + "/path" with a base that ends in / (the common case is ${server.url}/path) now reaches the server as //path. Bun.serve routes answer 404 to it. Write new URL("/path", server.url) instead, as the docs already say. An .npmrc token keyed to //host/npm/ no longer applies to a registry typed http://host//npm/: the key for it is //host//npm/, as npm builds it. Maintainer call: ship this in a 1.4.x release with a release note, or hold it for 1.5? The same question waits on #44641.

Problem

Fix

  • Remove the loop. Every client path reads its target from build_request: the HTTP/1.1 origin form, the proxy absolute form, the HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 :path, and each followed redirect. All of them now send the path as written.
  • bun install follows: a registry typed http://host//npm/ is requested as //npm/pkg, as npm 11 does, with or without credentials in its URL (href_without_auth now keeps the leading slashes). A root registry typed http://host// still requests /pkg. A tarball URL with a // path goes out as written.
  • bun upgrade and bun create trim a trailing / from GITHUB_API_DOMAIN. They wrote https://host//repos/... with it, and the loop hid that.
  • Verified: test/js/web/fetch/fetch.test.ts (origin form and proxy absolute form), fetch-http2-client.test.ts and fetch-http3-client.test.ts (:path), npmrc.test.ts (six registry rows), bun-upgrade.test.ts, bun-create.test.ts, filesystem_router.test.ts. Also ran proxy, s3, bun-install-pathname-trailing-slash and the thirteen rewritten test files on the debug build.

Background

Downsides

  • Breaking for the ${server.url}/path idiom, see the top. A server that redirects //path to /path with 301 turns a POST into a GET. FileSystemRouter#match(url) still matches the route and reports pathname as new URL() does (//posts).
  • A registry typed http://host//npm/ is now requested as //npm/pkg. A server that does not merge slashes answers 404 where it answered 200 before. npm sends the same request.
  • No cost per call: the change deletes a loop. The trim_right calls run once per bun upgrade or bun create invocation.
Notes

Probes on the debug build. fetch("http://127.0.0.1:PORT//a//b?x=1") against a raw net server: GET //a//b?x=1 HTTP/1.1. Through an HTTP proxy: GET http://example.test//a//b?x=1 HTTP/1.1. http.get of the same URL was already GET //a//b?x=1.

Readers of pathname checked. ServerConfig base URL and the router trim leading slashes themselves. fetch("file://...") uses the separate path field, whose trim is unchanged. server.fetch("/x") and server.fetch("///x") are unchanged, and server.fetch("//x") already fails on main (//x reads as a host). The cache folder name of a registry typed https://host// gains a hash suffix, so its packages download once more.

Earlier attempts. The branches robobun/6cf19512/fetch-keep-leading-slashes and robobun/91e8acaa/fetch-keep-leading-slashes removed the same loop and waited on #44641 plus the release question. This PR takes their test rewrite commit as is. Their href_without_auth and lockfile migration repairs are on main already (#38812, #44968).

Test runs. fetch.test.ts: the 19 failures on this container (network, AbortSignal.timeout(150) under ASAN, "B".repeat(7 * 1024) x100) fail the same way on the unfixed build. bun-server.test.ts, bun-serve-html.test.ts and a few npmrc tests timed out at 5 s in a full-file run and pass alone. The Rust unit tests in src/url/lib.rs run under cargo miri test in CI.

fetch("http://host//a//b") sent "GET /a//b". The byte-slice URL
parser collapsed every leading "//" of pathname to one "/". The
WHATWG parser keeps them and so do node and curl. Remove the collapse
so the HTTP client sends the request-target as written.
`server.url` ends with `/`, so `${server.url}/path` is `http://host//path`.
fetch() sent that as `/path`. These tests now build the URL they name,
with `new URL("/path", server.url)`.

(cherry picked from commit d884a5d)
…THUB_API_DOMAIN

A registry typed as http://host//npm/ is requested as //npm/pkg, as
npm does. The token keyed to //host//npm/ is the one sent to it.

bun upgrade and bun create build https://{GITHUB_API_DOMAIN}/repos/...
A domain with a trailing slash wrote //repos, which the URL parser used
to hide. Trim the slash.

FileSystemRouter#match(url) reports the pathname as new URL() reads it.

Explanation

Issue #45330 requires fetch() to preserve the URL pathname in the HTTP request-target. URL::parse_with no longer removes leading slashes from pathname. The new regression test checks HTTP/1.1 origin form and proxy absolute form for repeated leading slashes and query strings. The added HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 tests also check preserved :path values. The implementation satisfies the issue requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to the pathname-preservation fix. href_without_auth preserves registry leading slashes and the npmrc tests verify registry requests and token keys. The GitHub API handling removes trailing separators that would otherwise produce duplicate separators after the parser change. The test URL rewrites prevent existing tests from depending on the old slash collapse. These changes support the parser and request-target behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the "becomes empty after processing" case for the new GITHUB_API_DOMAIN trim in src/runtime/cli/create_command.rs and src/runtime/cli/upgrade_command.rs: the trim runs before the is_empty check, so a value of / falls back to api.github.com rather than producing https:///repos/.... The full-origin form (https://host/) still breaks, but that is pre-existing and not introduced here.

Extended reasoning...

The change removes the leading-// collapse in URL::parse (src/url/lib.rs), affecting every HTTP client, bun install registry, and router consumer of pathname, plus a trailing-slash trim on GITHUB_API_DOMAIN in two CLI commands and a large test rewrite. Inline findings cover the compatibility break, the credentialed-registry and S3 endpoint paths that still differ, and test-coverage gaps, so a human decision on the breaking behavior is needed; this note only records the one extra input case verified as handled.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/url/lib.rs — Users whose S3 endpoint is typed https://host// now send GET //bucket/key to the server instead of /bucket/key, and their requests fail with a different error than before. parse_s3_endpoint at src/url/lib.rs:401 strips only one trailing /, leaving host/ as host_with_path, and credentials.rs:385-387 turns that into extra_path /, so normalized_path is //bucket/key (credentials.rs:439). With the loop at src/url/lib.rs:824 gone the wire path is now //bucket/key; S3 and MinIO interpret that as an empty first segment and answer NoSuchBucket/404 instead of the previous SignatureDoesNotMatch. Fix: strip every trailing / in parse_s3_endpoint (use trim_right like the registry join does) so https://host// is the same endpoint as https://host/.

    Why this was flagged

An S3Credentials endpoint of https://host// (from S3_ENDPOINT via src/dotenv/env_loader.rs:280 or the JS options via src/runtime/webcore/s3/credentials_jsc.rs:103) reaches URL::parse_s3_endpoint. The WHATWG pathname is // and strings::without_suffix_comptime at src/url/lib.rs:401 removes exactly one /, so host_with_path becomes host/. In sign() the first / splits host from extra_path (/) at src/s3_signing/credentials.rs:385-387, and normalized_path is formatted as //bucket/key at credentials.rs:436-445; this string is both signed (credentials.rs:740) and placed in the URL (credentials.rs:731). On the base branch URL::parse collapsed the wire path to /bucket/key so the signature mismatched; after this PR the wire path is //bucket/key, which S3-compatible servers treat as an empty bucket segment. Either way the user's endpoint never works, but the failure mode changes; trimming all trailing slashes in parse_s3_endpoint is a one-line fix in this same file that the PR's own registry join already applies (src/install/NetworkTask.rs:579).

Verification: On the base branch the same endpoint already fails, so merging does not newly break a working configuration. parse_s3_endpoint (src/url/lib.rs:398-401) removes exactly one /, so host_with_path is host/ and normalized_path is //bucket/key (src/s3_signing/credentials.rs:436-445). With the loop at src/url/lib.rs:824 removed, the wire request-target is now //bucket/key where before it was /bucket/key.

…, drop every trailing slash of an S3 endpoint

A registry with credentials in its URL, http://u:p@host//npm/, is now
requested at //npm/pkg like the same registry without credentials.

An S3 endpoint is a base: https://host//, https://host/ and https://host
all request /bucket/key. parse_s3_endpoint removed one trailing slash
and left //bucket/key in the signed path.

Tests: the proxy absolute form and the HTTP/2 :path, bun create with a
GITHUB_API_DOMAIN that ends in a slash.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/url/lib.rs — nit: S3 users whose endpoint the WHATWG parser rejects still get a // in the request path from trailing slashes, which the base branch already sent as written. The fallback at src/url/lib.rs:390-394 copies as_written.host_with_path(), which drops only one trailing / (src/url/lib.rs:346-350), while the main path at src/url/lib.rs:401 now uses trim_right. Fix: strip every trailing / on both branches of parse_s3_endpoint, e.g. apply strings::trim_right(.., b"/") to the fallback value too, so host/prefix// yields host/prefix whichever parser handled it.

    Why this was flagged

An S3 endpoint such as https://host:99999/prefix// (a port or host the WHATWG parser refuses but URL::parse accepts) reaches parse_s3_endpoint from the S3 client options. whatwg::Parsed::from_utf8 returns None at src/url/lib.rs:390, so the fallback at src/url/lib.rs:392 uses as_written.host_with_path(), which removes only the last / (src/url/lib.rs:346-350) and yields host:99999/prefix/. The client then builds https://host:99999/prefix//bucket/key; on the base branch the loop at the old src/url/lib.rs:824 collapsed leading slashes only, so this path was equally wrong there, but the diff changed the sibling branch at src/url/lib.rs:401 to trim_right and left this one, so the function's two branches now disagree on how many trailing slashes they remove. The new test s3_endpoint_drops_every_trailing_slash at src/url/lib.rs:1897 only exercises the WHATWG branch.

Verification: pre-existing (nit): the fallback branch of parse_s3_endpoint was left with the old one-slash trim while the main branch got trim_right, so it yields host/prefix/ and a request path /prefix//bucket/key for an endpoint written with trailing //; the base branch sent the identical path. Trigger: an endpoint whatwg::Parsed::from_utf8 rejects (src/url/lib.rs:390-394).

I re-reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; the earlier inline feedback (bun create coverage, proxy and HTTP/2 request-target rows, href_without_auth keeping leading slashes, reusing startReleaseServer) is addressed in the code now. Because this deliberately changes what fetch, bun install and FileSystemRouter#match report or send for a // path, a maintainer should still decide whether to ship it as a breaking change.

What was reviewed:

  • src/url/lib.rs: the removed // collapse, the new href_without_auth shape (empty, /, //, /npm, //npm/ all serialize as the Rust test asserts), and parse_s3_endpoint on both branches.
  • Every reader of URL.pathname (HTTP/1.1 origin and proxy forms, h2 :path, NetworkTask join, RegistryKey walk, server.fetch base join, cache folder naming, router) — each either keeps the path verbatim by design or trims on its own.
  • create_command.rs / upgrade_command.rs: strings is already imported and trim_right has the (&[u8], &[u8]) -> &[u8] signature; without_suffix_comptime still has other callers.
  • The thirteen rewritten test files are mechanical ${server.url}/x to new URL("/x", server.url) changes with no assertion weakened.
Extended reasoning...

The diff deletes the loop in bun_url::URL::parse that collapsed a leading // in pathname, makes href_without_auth and parse_s3_endpoint trim only the right side, and trims a trailing / from GITHUB_API_DOMAIN in bun create and bun upgrade, plus Rust unit tests and JS tests for fetch (direct, proxy, h2), npmrc, s3, FileSystemRouter, bun create and bun upgrade. The security-sensitive surface is the .npmrc token lookup key: it now derives from the uncollapsed path, so a token keyed to //host/npm/ no longer matches a registry written as http://host//npm/, which is npm's behavior and is asserted by a test row. No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files and every prior inline comment from this bot was addressed by commits e10b099..f91606b. Deferring rather than approving because the change is an intentional user-visible break (request-targets, install registry paths, router pathname) that the PR description itself labels breaking, which is a product decision for a maintainer.

Nothing new to post: everything this review found is already covered by existing comments on this pull request or didn't merit a separate one.

The S3 endpoint trailing-slash trim moves to its own pull request: it
fixes a signature mismatch that exists with or without the collapse.
